Generating covalent bonds between two different materials or two molecules of the same material is one way to raise the performance of these systems – whether the desired enhancement is better adhesion; improved chemical, scrub or corrosion resistance; superior mechanical or electrical properties; or longer-lasting durability. Our customers have employed our family of Silquest silanes for just such an array of benefits. Versatile and possessing the ability to react with a wide variety of organic and inorganic materials, Silquest silanes work effectively as coupling agents, crosslinking agents and surface modifiers. Silquest silanes have been used in high-strength crosslinked plastics, easily dispersed fillers, and resilient adhesives and coatings.
The key to the Silquest line's versatile efficacy in adhesion promotion and coupling is the difunctionality of these organofunctional silanes; two types of reactivity built into the molecular structure. A functional group at one end of the molecule is designed for reactivity with an organic resin, while the other end has the ability to bond with a variety of inorganic materials as well as itself.
At ambient temperatures and humidity conditions, Silquest silanes can crosslink polymer molecules to create a three-dimensional network. This crosslinking may result in improved thermal stability and creep resistance, as well as hardness and chemical resistance in coatings, adhesives, sealants and composites. Crosslinking may also improve wet adhesion, enable primerless adhesion to many substrates, and improve weatherability and durability.
As a coupling agent between resins and fibers, Silquest silanes may improve fiber strand integrity and improve the wet strength retention and electrical characteristics of fiber-reinforced composites. Mineral filled polymers may also benefit from Silquest silanes yielding enhanced filler dispersion and processing ease. And coupling with Silquest silanes may enhance the mechanical properties of coatings and adhesives, including the strength, abrasion and chemical resistance properties of the end product.
Momentive works closely with our customers to find the Silquest solution that best meets their needs, with their particular resin type and application. Potential application areas for the Silquest silane product line include:
