Thermal Protection Systems

Momentive produces a wide range of materials used in thermal protection systems. Our RTV silicones consist of rubber and gel products developed for adhesion, sealing, coating and encapsulation/ potting applications. The Si-O backbone of silicones provides excellent temperature performance, both high temperature stability and low temperature flexibility for extreme temperatures, excellent dielectric properties, and outstanding weatherability resistance for extreme environments. With our long history in Aerospace, Momentive’s RTV silicones are an excellent choice for many applications.

Silicone RTVs For Thermal Protection Systems

RTV 133 black sealant, one-component adhesive  is an excellent candidate to consider where resistance to burning of the finished product is a design consideration. It offers high strength, primerless adhesion to many substrates and a non-corrosive (alkoxy) cure. It has UL94 V-0 component recognition.

RTV 560 sealant, RTV 566 sealant, RTV 567 sealant, RTV 511 sealant, and RTV 577 sealant silicone rubber compounds can provide outstanding adhesion with a primer at low temperatures. All cure at room temperature and provide variable cure rates by adjusting the curing agent. These products offer the widest useful temperature range and thermal stability of all Momentive products, -115°C (-175°F) up to 204°C (400°F) continuously and up to 260°C (500°F) for short periods of time.

RTV560 silicone elastomer has one of the widest useful temperature (highest and lowest) temperature ranges, with temperatures from -115°C(-175°F) up to 260°C (500°F) continuously and up to 316°C (600°F) for short periods of time.

Potential Applications

Typical applications include, but are not limited to:

  • Cast-in-place heat shielding
  • Thermal insulation
  • Low and high-temperature bonding
  • Potting and encapsulation of electrical assemblies

RTV 31, RTV 60 and RTV 88/88HB silicone rubber compounds, part of Momentive’s high temperature two part silicone materials, differ primarily in viscosity in the uncured state. RTV 31 and RTV 60 silicone rubber compounds can be excellent choices for potting and encapsulating applications, while RTV 88/88HB compound can be considered for vertical or overhead surfaces.

RTV 157 and RTV 159 silicone rubber compounds are high strength, paste adhesives with an acetoxy cure. RTV 159 adhesive offers high temperature performance and high strength performance

Our value-added process innovations, global reach, and commitment to successful business relationships can help you reduce costs, heighten quality, and soar above the competition.
