SilForce™ SLP Coatings

Fast cure technology with low platinum levels

Momentive’s SilForce* SLP coatings are revolutionary, low platinum coatings for the release coating industry. Our patent pending formula uses only 10-20% platinum, yet still provides full coverage and rapid curing without decreased anchorage or release performance. Our low platinum coatings can help you reduce operational costs and hedge against platinum price increases. Best of all, SilForce SLP coatings can be applied using the same application processes as conventional release coatings.

What is SilForce™ SLP Coatings?

SilForce SLP Coatings are used in the manufacturing of release liners for the tapes and labels industry. The cure chemistry behind this technology is driven by the precious metal platinum. Over the past 10 years, the cost of platinum has been volatile – it has hovered at historical lows between $800-$850 per troy ounce in recent years. This has been great for the release liner industry where platinum accounts for 30%-45% of today’s formulation costs. However, experts are predicting a rally in platinum prices, which is no surprise based on past volatility. This means a potentially significant cost increase for manufacturers.

Momentive’s new patent pending, fast cure, SilForce SLP Coatings consist of a base polymer, crosslinker and platinum catalyst. With our new SLP polymer technology, we have been able to show comparable cure, process and release performance at low platinum levels with no degradation in anchorage on commercially available substrates.

Low platinum SilForce SLP Coatings can provide additional benefits including:

  • Formulation and process flexibility
  • Lower process temperatures
  • The ability to coat thermally sensitive substrates with lower cost formulations
  • Less remoisturization needed to control layflat
  • Higher line speeds
