Metal Coatings

Innovative Metal Coatings for Exceptional Corrosion and Abrasion Resistance

Anodization provides aluminum surfaces with a durable, corrosion-resistant oxide barrier layer. For extreme conditions, SilFORT™ hardcoats, formulated without PFAS, can be applied to provide additional protection, including acid/alkali resistance from pH 1.0 to pH 13.5, plus excellent abrasion, chemical, stain and salt spray resistance. SilFORT MHC2700 is applied to anodized aluminum surfaces. SilFORT MHC2710 can be applied directly to a non-anodized aluminum surface, eliminating the expensive anodization process, while still meeting performance and appearance requirements.

Where to Use Hardcoats for Metals

  • Automotive

SilFORT hardcoats offer excellent corrosion, abrasion and chemical resistance for a range of automotive applications, such as exterior trim, interior trim, roof rails and alloy wheels. Our protective coatings meet or exceed leading OEM specifications, such as salt spray or acid/alkali resistance (pH 1.0 to pH 13.5). They can be applied direct-to-metal, eliminating the need for a primer layer, and are formulated without PFAS. Gloss levels can also be customized, from a rich, glossy metallic appearance to a matte or satin finish.

  • Architectural

SilFORT hardcoats can be applied to extruded aluminum profiles for architectural applications to withstand the elements and day to-day contact. Our liquid protective clearcoats are used to protect against abrasion, chemicals, corrosion and weathering for window trim, doors and patio enclosures.

  • Heat Exchangers/HVAC

SilFORT hardcoats can be used to protect aluminum in heat exchangers to help extend operational life. Our protective coatings are extremely resistant to abrasion, corrosion and weathering. Coated aluminum fins are used in heat exchangers for a variety of applications including HVAC equipment, automotive and other industrial applications.

  • Marine

Excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance are key requirements for marine applications, as well as good weathering. SilFORT hardcoats enable aluminum trim parts to retain their rich glossy metallic appearance on marine vessels.

  • Appliances

Momentive’s SilFORT hardcoats are excellent at protecting appliance surfaces. Our hardcoats provide both scratch resistance and chemical resistance on surfaces that come in contact with daily handling and harsh cleaning supplies, like refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers and aluminum trim parts.

Why Use Hardcoats on Metals?

  • Outstanding Protection

Increased corrosion, abrasion, pH, chemical, stain and weathering resistance to provide higher durability.

  • Superior Appearance

Achieve a rich, glossy metallic finish or a uniform matte finish on different shaped parts.

  • Lower Cost

Apply directly to the aluminum alloy, eliminating the anodization process, while continuing to meet performance and appearance needs.

Which Application Method?

SilFORT hardcoats can be applied using several different application methods depending on factors such as part geometry, type of pretreatment and specification requirements.

Momentive has a rich history in developing high-performance hardcoat solutions. With research centers, application development labs and production facilities around the world, we guarantee that our customers are given the very best in innovation, technical support and quality products. Our broad range of hardcoats now includes two new thermally cured, direct-to-metal protective coatings. SilFORT MHC2700 and SilFORT MHC2710 have been developed to protect anodized aluminum and untreated aluminum, respectively.
