Part of the Solution: 40-Year Study Shows How Momentive Silicones Stand the Test of Time

Aug 11, 2026

Through our Part of the Solution series, we’re highlighting how Momentive technologies help address real-world challenges through proven performance. In construction, durability is what helps buildings stay protected, resilient, and efficient over time. Momentive’s SilPruf™ weatherseal sealant is designed to deliver durable protection in demanding environments, helping buildings withstand movement, weather exposure, and time. This 100% silicone paste is a versatile sealant that cures to a durable seal. Because of this, it can withstand high joint movement and weather exposure for decades.

The results have been resounding: Silicone’s performance is unparalleled.

The study – conducted at the Atlas Weathering Test Site in Miami, Florida, United States – involved mounting panels of glass and painted aluminum outdoors at a 45-degree angle facing south, simulating real-world exposure. Researchers assessed the materials based on adhesion (the sealant’s ability to maintain long-term bonding), flexibility (the sealant’s capacity to bend without breaking or cracking), resilience (the percent the sealant returns to its original shape within five minutes of bending 180 degrees), toughness (the sealant’s ability to absorb energy, and bend and stretch under stress without cracking), and hardness (the sealant’s resistance to deforming when faced with diverse weather conditions). Our silicone solutions were compared to polyurethane, acrylic, and additional  silicone options from five other manufacturers.

Silicone sealants consistently outperformed polyurethane and acrylic counterparts in nearly every category. Acetoxy silicone (which is cured by releasing acetic acid) demonstrated exceptional durability, maintained superior surface condition, and exhibited 100 percent elastic recovery even after decades of exposure. However, alkoxy silicone (cured by releasing a neutral methanol, so it is safer for the environment), was compatible with a broader range of surfaces and materials, and, despite seeing slight performance decline in its fourth decade, maintained strong flexibility and resilience, continuing to outperform polyurethane and acrylic alternatives over the long term.

Another key insight from the study was the importance of maintaining strong adhesive bonds while remaining flexible to accommodate structural movement – a key to long-term weatherproofing. This is precisely what SilPruf is designed to offer — and why Momentive sealants are used on so many buildings in the world, from the Mira Tower in San Francisco to the Central Park Tower in New York, or the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, all the way to the Shanghai World Financial Center and the Pudong International Airport in Shanghai.

Momentive is Part of the Solution for building projects worldwide.

By combining long-term durability, strong adhesion, lower VOC emissions, and reliable performance across demanding conditions, Momentive sealants help support safer, more resilient, and more efficient building projects around the world.

That is why Momentive silicones for building are Part of the Solution.
