MPM to Showcase Innovative Silicone Solutions at Fakuma 2014

MPM TO SHOWCASE INNOVATIVE SILICONE SOLUTIONS AT FAKUMA 2014

WATERFORD, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2014) – Momentive Performance Materials Inc. (MPM) will showcase innovative silicone solutions at Fakuma 2014, Oct. 14 – 18. The company will feature liquid silicone rubber (LSR), high-consistency rubber and custom compounding capabilities.

At the MPM booth, manufacturers will learn how these silicone elastomer products can enable design freedom and help address complex processing challenges. MPM’s Silopren* and Silplus* elastomers offer a variety of benefits for medical, consumer goods and automotive applications.

  • Silopren Matrix fiber-reinforced LSR: MPM’s Silopren Matrix LSR combines the flexibility of a silicone elastomer with the high strength of polymeric fibers for applications requiring increased stiffness, like wrist bands for wearable electronic devices. This composite elastomer can be used to create products that are comfortable against skin, exhibit excellent UV resistance and can be easily colored to meet aesthetic needs. Silopren Matrix LSR can offer manufacturers cost savings by potentially eliminating the need for an additional fabric layer. And, sample testing has indicated that the use of this LSR can be in compliance with applicable FDA regulations and ISO 10993.
  • Silplus 30 AS anti-static silicone rubber: MPM’s anti-static heat-cured rubber and LSR help remove static charge without the use of carbon black fillers. This enables manufacturers to create products in a variety of colors, as well as translucent products. Silplus 30 AS heat-cured rubber’s ability to reduce electrostatic charge and decrease dust pick-up make it an excellent candidate to consider for use in keyboard covers, elastomeric keypads and buttons, soft-touch features on devices, as well as other consumer electronic applications. The material’s good strength and compression set properties make it flexible and reliable as a sealing product. Silplus 30 AS silicone rubber starts a new category in MPM’s global Silplus portfolio of heat-cured rubber base compounds that can help customers meet specifications and engineering standards with consistency across the globe.
  • Silopren LSR 3376/50:  The new Silopren LSR 3376/50 is the first member of MPM’s new low-volatile, self-lubricating LSR family that aims to meet increasingly stringent safety specifications for automotive electrical systems. This material can address the critical need of manufacturers in Asia for connector seals that have very low levels of volatiles and do not require post-curing to achieve this. Silopren LSR 3376/50 typically has an oil content of three percent; contains below 350ppm of total D4 to D8 cycles and achieves a nominal hardness of 50 Shore A and low-compression set of 16 percent. The low-volatile finished product can pass typical connector materials specifications for manufacturers in Asia and can easily be colored according to the individual technical specifications.

MPM will also be showcasing capabilities to create customized elastomers for unique customer needs around the world. With sites in Europe, North and South America, China and India, MPM has local resources to support manufacturers in developing materials for the performance, processing and production demands of their specific applications. This local support can help manufacturers in launching products based on global specifications.

“We can collaborate with customers to develop tailored solutions to meet their needs,” said Jonathan Chard, MPM Custom Elastomers Manager. “In our application centers, we help customers run extrusion trials and performance tests to find the right silicone or fluorosilicone compound without impacting mass production at their facilities. And we recently expanded capacity, allowing us to develop these solutions even faster.”

MPM’s state-of-the-art facility in Lostock, United Kingdom offers European manufacturers a new application development center focusing on extrusion with UV-curing technology and low-density materials, as well as thickwall extrusion. This facility also operates a dedicated mixing area for platinum-catalyzed silicone elastomers used in a variety of healthcare applications.
