Momentive Performance Materials Introduces Silopren* Ultra-Low Compression Set, Oil-Bleeding LSR Products

ALBANY, N.Y., October 18, 2011 — Momentive Performance Materials Inc. today announced the expansion of its liquid silicone rubber (LSR) product offering for high performance connectors with the launch of Silopren* LSR 3696/20 (6% oil) with 20 Shore A hardness and Silopren LSR 3596/35 (5% oil) with 35 Shore A hardness.

The new Silopren LSR products are excellent candidates to consider for wire harness applications and are now being used successfully in multi-terminal mat seals. Both products represent the most recent LSR technology by Momentive Performance Materials and offer a low level of compression set without post curing. They are among the innovative products and platform technologies featured by Momentive Performance Materials at the FAKUMA international trade fair, October 18-22, in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

“When it comes to complex designs and difficult shapes in electrical connector seals, Momentive’s portfolio of oil-bleeding LSRs has a successful track record,” said Oliver Franssen, Global Marketing Director for Transportation at Momentive Performance Materials. “The new product line was developed in response to the increasing quality expectations of original equipment and tier manufacturers as well as to the complexities created in the miniaturization of connectors.“

Peroxide and addition cured high consistency rubber (HCR) compounds still dominate mat seal applications. The new Silopren LSR products offer the necessary low modulus, and have been shown to allow for easy cable and connector assembly, with minimal incidence of defects. Unlike the competitive HCR compound technology, however, it is possible to use the Silopren LSR products for fully automated, flash-less and trim-free LSR molding in short cycle time. This can be a significant potential benefit in the connector industry, given the numerous parts required and the low-defect quality expectations that are often associated with the very low parts per million (ppm) range.

“We expect early adoption of this new Silopren LSR technology,” Mr. Franssen added. “Its development cycle was highly complex, and we worked with globally active automotive tier manufacturers to prove its functionality.”

Silopren LSR 3696/20 and 3596/35 build on the successful introduction of Silopren LSR 3596/30 with a compression set of 15% without post curing, measured according to ISO 815, 22 hours at 175°C on press-molded slabs.
