Momentive Performance Materials Presents Advancements in UV Cure Technology for Silicone-Based Medical Polymers
ALBANY, N.Y., February 16, 2012 — Momentive Performance Materials Inc., a leading global provider of silicones and advanced materials, co-sponsored a full conference session titled, “Advances in Medical Polymers for Medical Devices” at the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) West Exposition and Conference in Anaheim, CA on February 13, 2012. During the session, in conjunction with Specialty Silicone Fabricators (SSF), Momentive presented a case study that demonstrates the ability to use UV (ultraviolet) light to vulcanize silicone elastomers containing different thermally sensitive materials at multiple concentrations.
During the MD&M West Exposition that started February 14, Momentive demonstrated its UV, low temperature cure technology for silicone elastomers to showcase. Addisil* UV 60 EX elastomer, which can be cured on demand by exposure to UV light. The new elastomer is an excellent candidate to consider for medical applications where lower temperatures during the manufacturing process and typical silicone rubber physical properties are required. The cure technology was demonstrated on Nordson equipment. Momentive and SSF also presented an abbreviated version of the case study results at the Innovative Brief sessions on the Expo Hall floor.
“The UV extrusion process offers many advantages,” said Lynn Colucci-Mizenko, Global Marketing Director, Momentive Performance Materials. “It allows for very fast, on-demand cure at room temperature that can produce high quality products with tight tolerances. Room temperature cure also opens the door to new combinations with low temperature materials.”
UV cure silicone elastomers are just one of the proprietary platforms of enabling technology that Momentive offers to help drive innovation in the medical device industry. StatSil* antimicrobial elastomer, developed using an innovative technology that provides built-in antimicrobial protection in silicone-based elastomers, continues to be a featured product line. Responding to the medical industry’s heightened concern over bacterial contamination on critical device surfaces, StatSil elastomer may allow product designers to incorporate into the medical device itself anti-microbial protection for the purpose of controlling microbes in or on the human body, in examples such as catheters and wound drains. Representative samples of StatSil HCR 50 HC and StatSil HCR 55 HC have passed USP Class VI (United States Pharmacopeia 32, National Formulary 27, 2009. <88> Biological Reactivity Test, In Vivo tests) and ISO 10993 (Part 6, 10, and 11) tests using Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
Momentive also recently updated a 48-page brochure for its expanded elastomer portfolio and released a new brochure on its UV cure technology.
“The purity, clarity, strength and other outstanding qualities of silicone rubber continue to drive the growing use of elastomers in medical device components,” Ms. Colucci-Mizenko added. “We are proud to introduce unique, patent-protected technology platforms that can serve as a starting point for customers’ new ideas and creative solutions for improving both patient outcomes and healthcare economics.”
